Managing Editor of The Mantle's Emerging Imprint

The Mantle seeks a managing editor for a soon-to-be launched imprint of international literature. The ME will work very closely with and report directly to both the Publisher and Associate Publisher. 
As the ME, you will oversee all aspects of the imprint's operations, including: 

  • Acquisition -- scouting for authors and titles, evaluating manuscripts, securing rights and contracts
  • Liaising with authors scattered around this beautiful Earth
  • Production -- editing, interior and exterior design, deadlines, and publishing to several digital and print platforms
  • Marketing and publicity -- promoting individual titles, groups/themes of titles, and the imprint's brand as a whole, using social media (womp womp), newsletters, events, and other means
  • Attendance at industry events
  • Keeping an ear to ground for what's what in international literature and trends
  • And other relevant tasks as they arise

You should:

  • Have prior experience in the world of books
  • Embody a start-up mentality
  • Edit like it's nobody's business
  • Be tenacious
  • Have a keen eye for detail
  • Be extremely organized
  • Be able to manage multiple projects at different stages at once
  • Work independently and be proactive
  • Be highly emotionally intelligent
  • Check your ego
  • Be a cool person -- assholes need not apply

Deputy Managing Editor, Online Magazine

We’re growing! As a result, we are looking for a Deputy Managing Editor. The DME will oversee our editorial team, day-to-day tasks of keeping the online magazine plugging along, and of course, editing. We are currently an all-volunteer team, so this is a volunteer position, but with growth comes opportunity, so who knows where things may lead.

 

You will:

  • Manage editorial staff w/ day-to-day tasks, like assignments, deadlines, and pitches
  • Make tough editorial calls on essays, interviews, etc.
  • Know and maintain The Mantle’s voice
  • Final layout of essays on website
  • Manage social media activity (mostly Twitter and Facebook)

 

You should:

  • Have experience in editing - and be able to flow in and out of different subject areas
  • Know Drupal (at a level where you can do essay layout and basic editing)
  • Have basic photo editing ability
  • Be savvy on social media
  • Have managed staff or interns before
  • Be highly emotionally intelligent
  • Work independently and be proactive
  • Check your ego
  • Be a cool person -- assholes need not apply
